Subject: cleaning service at home?
Hi all,

I realize that this isn't really being very frugal...but I have been
having trouble keeping my house clean.  I am not home much during the week
so I just come home and sleep.  But for some reason by the time the
weekend comes around, my place is starting to become a mess.  I also like
to keep things pretty clean though so I find that every 2 weeks, I spend
about 8 hours on Saturday doing nothing but cleaning around the house.
vaccuming all of the rooms, wiping dust, washing floors, rearranging
things, etc....and it is taking a toll.

I live by myself in a 1500 sq ft 3 bedroom/3 bath house so I also don't
have anyone around to help me out.

I have been thinking of getting a professional maid to come in and clean
once every 2 weeks.  She said that she could clean my entire house and do
my laundry (including folding, etc...) for $50.  So this would be a
$100/mo cost.

I think this would be worth it.  I got this maid from a friend who said
that she is very good and efficient.  Is this price about right?  I've
never used a maid before so I don't know what their rates are.

I'm sure people won't go into details much here but has anyone used
illegal immigrants for maid service?  There are many of those types of
flyers around but I have been staying away from them.

Another concern is also that I will probably not be home when the maid is
here.  Are there big problems with valuables getting stolen, etc.?

Dan.

I use a cleaning service for 3 hours every other week- this costs
$80/month. i have had an individual clean for me before but found this to
be cheaper but pretty unsatisfactory, so switched to a servie. They use
their own supplies and equipment, they are BONDED so breakage or theft
would be no problem (never yet happened). I feel better going through a
business- if there should be  any problems, I would just call their boss.
They do not clean every thing though. We clean our bedroom, have the
others done when the kids are coming home, do the laundry, dishes etc. I
will not pay them to pick up after us, so everything is neat on cleaning
day so nothing slows them down. I love it- even if we do nothing, the
place is always presentable.  I think the $100/month is reasonable
considering what you want her to do...and very frugal in terms of mental
health.

Based on only a little experience with this kind of thing I think the price
quoted sounds reasonable. Not cheap, but reasonable. As to your concern
about valuables, I doubt that a friend would recommend anyone if they'd
stolen from them; however, you might ask your friend how s/he handles the
question of protecting their own valuables from theft. Most people are
honest (although one might not be to sure from a couple other threads going
on right now <g>), but personally if I had small valuable things I might
consider hiding them or locking them up at least while the cleaning woman is
relatively new.

Have you considered comparing rates with one of the major national chain
outfits like Servicemaster or Mini Maids or whatever they're called? Those
people are bonded, have insurance, and would possibly be less of a theft
risk. Also I believe they send in a team to clean the house in just a couple
hours, so you might be able to have them come when you're home.

I recall vaguely when my mother used to employ a cleaning woman that she
paid Social Security for her. This was years ago and I'm not up to date on
what the law is now. You might want to check into that, though.

I do know from first hand experience that if you pay someone to do work in
your home, and you pay them more than $1000 a year, you will have to issue
them a W-2 form and pay taxes for them.  There is a line right on the 1040
form that asks if you pay anyone to do domestic work for you.  A friend of
mine did cleaning for years, and stopped because of the tax consequences to
herself and the people she cleaned for.

where I am I pay a lmost a hundred dollars every two weeks (or did
when I used to have my house cleaned, gave it up) for a three bedroom
semi-detached.  hope this helps.  It helpstho, if before you come home
and sleep, you take five or ten minutes to put your clothes in the
washbasket, wipe the sink (leave a towel by the sink and tub) and so
forth..If its worth it to you tho, go for it

I dont get regular cleaning done now, but I do on occasion pay for
someone to do big stuff, like windows, clean my oven and clean my
fridge

That price is VERY reasonable, provided that they do a decent job of it.
When we first hired an agency, we went through at least three people before
I found someone who would do the job to my standards.  I was just inquiring
about service for our 2 bdrm 2 bath apt (1000 sq feet), I found out I would
be paying about $67.00-79.00 - this is in the San Francisco bay area.

Be certain that the person is either bonded and insured, or very trustworthy
with plenty of references.  I once worked with a woman whose dad had hired
an illegal immigrant in one of the border towns of South Texas.  He came
home one day to find that all of his nice silver and valuables were gone.
On top of losing a maid, he had lost a lot of his valuable posessions!

My mother had various cleaning people through the last ten years or
so of her life, I've had various cleaning people when I was working
(at various times of my life when I could afford it).  (a)  The price
seems low (for California, I see your address is from Berkeley).  (b)
It sure was worth it!  If you can afford it and if you don't choose to
spend your spare time cleaning house, it's WONDERFUL.  (c)  My mother
never had any problems with anything being stolen.  She was home when
the cleaning people were there, however.  (d)  When I had cleaning
people and wasn't home, I never had any problems with things being
stolen, either.  YMMV.

And that is exactly as it should be.  These deadbeats that owe such things

the low (and they probably are disproportionately likely to complain about
welfare recipients!).
