Yes, unless you're a mycologist (someone specially trained in mushroom
identification). Otherwise we'll see a thread entitled "How do I get a
frugal liver transplant?"

Somehow I don't think cattails would be too great stewed in a gravy
for umpteen hours. :-)

(Don't get me wrong, I love oxtail stew - and curse a lot because our
stupidmarket doesn't carry 'em, 'cuz they're a great cheap meat that
stretches a looooooooong way. Just takes a looooooong time to get
those tail sections tender enough to chew!)

AWWWWWWWWWWWWW man Mari!!!,

Now you have gone and got my guilts going agin.  As an Asthmatic,
living in a vally that attracts MUCHO polution every summer, I swear I
will have one of these thingies.  Got one in my most recent car (used
car, had it in) but have not yet popped for one for the apt.  It DOES
seem wimpy, even as I lie gasping for breath each mid August!

If this DOEs start a flamewar, I will glefully ignore it, after adding
a line or two of :  :-P   :-P   :-P   :-P   :-PPPPPPPPPPP

This is the song that dosn't end, yes it goes on and on my friend.  Some people started singing it not knowing what it was, and they continued singing it forever just because this is the song . . .

Many years ago my scout troop was cleaning a camping cabin and our leader (a registered nurse!) decided if bleach cleaned well and ammonia did too - let's mix 'em and REALLY!!! clean.

Well, all us scouts (grade school age) were coughing and had our eyes watering and finally went outside (windows were shut because it was winter).  Our leader tried to indicate we were kind of wimpy not being able to stay in and clean.

Later that day when visiting another camp site another leader informed our leader about the fumes from such a mixture being toxic. Our leader never lived that one down!!!!!!!

Ah . . . the good old camping days!!

The remaining $11,000 on the mortgage. Came time to roll over an old
high-yield  bond and didn't see anything better to invest in.

Never had any other debt over $2500, which was a car loan. Now I pay
cash for cars in that price range.

I really tried to work with cast iron and I never did understand it.  "season
[it] properly" you say, yet I've never read any instructions for seasoning
that didn't leave me with more questions than they answered.

"Don't run them through the dishwasher" I can handle, but again, I've never
really understood how people get them clean after, say, scrambled eggs (all
the instructions I've seen just say "wipe clean, don't wash") and then *keep*
them from *rusting* on the shelf.

And they are as "good as teflon linings".  HUH?  Well, possibly because I have
never been able to clean and season a pan properly, but... gosh, ever tried to
cook scrambled eggs in it?  Half the egg mixture is permanently melded with
the iron.  The stuff has more staying power than library glue (well, almost).

There are *secrets* to using cast iron.  Secrets that people who use it never
think to tell those of us who have never successfully used it. Things that are
so obvious to them that they don't think to tell us.  It's like a cult. And
people who use cast iron act/sound like people who don't/can't are imbeciles
because it's so "easy" to use. :D

I've given up and will never spend the money on a cast iron pan again.  It's
too damn much work for very little pay off, IMO.
